Daylight Savings Time Ends Sunday, November 7th
November 5, 2021
This year’s Daylight Saving Time started on March 14, 2021, and we had to change our clocks forward, which many weren’t happy about. This week on Sunday, November 7 at 2 A.M we’ll fall back one hour for this year’s end of Daylight Saving Time. Don’t forget to change your clocks back one hour and catch up on some sleep.
The purpose of Daylight Saving is to save energy in homes as best as we can. Since the sun has risen by the time many wake up, there would be less need to use light and any similar appliances. There is the energy saved as people go out and drive around longer when they have that extra time for themselves in the evenings. Despite the benefits, the main reason 19 states want to change DST is the loss of sleep, creating a health concern, which may affect workers more than it is helping the states save energy.
One way to remember how the clock changes is to remember, “Spring forward- Fall back.” During spring we go forward one hour, losing an hour, and in fall we go back an hour, obtaining another hour. But there soon might be no need to remember because many states have favored exempting themselves from this system. Except for Hawaii and Arizona, all US states use Daylight Saving Time.
According to the US Department of Transportation, which is in charge of time zones and daylight saving time, there have been 19 states that have tried to observe Daylight Saving Time all year round. Meaning that they would turn back or forward the next year, but the Uniform Time Act needs to be followed. For a change to happen federal law needs to be taken into account as well. They also need to consider surrounding states, so that time zones won’t be jumbled up and be inconvenient to citizens. When adding legal decisions it’s easy to say that we will still go with Daylight Saving Time for many years to come.
Turning back an hour also means it will become darker earlier in the afternoon. It is important that everyone is mindful of this and aware of their surroundings. Keep safe and enjoy this Sunday. The next daylight saving time will start on March 13, 2022, and end on November 6, 2022.
